There’s a moment every gemstone buyer knows: staring at a listing online, wondering if the stone is real, if the seller actually knows what they’re talking about, or if you’re about to make a decision you’ll regret. We built Root and Carat because that moment shouldn’t feel like a gamble, whether you’re looking at a sapphire, an emerald, a moonstone, or anything in between.

Sri Lanka has been pulling gemstones out of the earth for over 2,000 years, from sapphires and rubies to moonstones, garnets, and cat’s eye. Few places on the planet carry this depth of gemstone history, and it shaped how we think about every stone we write about, not just one.

That history isn’t distant for us. It’s personal. Growing up around Sri Lanka’s gem trade means understanding things most people never get close to: the gem-bearing gravel locally called “illam,” the woven “vatti” baskets used to sift it by hand, and the early morning gem markets where a stone changes hands based on nothing but trust and a trained eye.
