There’s a moment every gemstone buyer knows: staring at a listing online, wondering if the stone is real, if the seller actually knows what they’re talking about, or if you’re about to make a decision you’ll regret. We built Root & Carat because that moment shouldn’t feel like a gamble, whether you’re looking at a sapphire, an emerald, a moonstone, or anything in between.
According to historical accounts, Sri Lanka has been pulling gemstones from the earth for well over 2,000 years, from sapphires and rubies to moonstones, garnets, and cat’s eyes. Few places carry this depth of gemstone history, and it shapes how we approach every stone we write about.
That history isn’t distant for us. It’s personal. Growing up around Sri Lanka’s gem trade means understanding things most people never get close to: the gem-bearing gravel locally called illam, the woven vatti baskets used to sift it by hand, and the early morning gem markets where a stone changes hands on trust and a trained eye.
We wanted a place where you can learn what actually makes a gemstone valuable, without feeling like you’re being sold to at every turn.

Over time, Root & Carat will also offer gemstones for sale, with clear disclosure of origin and treatments. For now, our goal is simple: to be an honest, plain-spoken educational resource for every gemstone, not just one.
